It's a great book if you're Phonetic Linguistics book on the History of Phonetics, and Ladefoged's contribuitions to the field. The interview in the first chapter Phonetic Linguistics book really interesting, and the subsequent articles all discuss interesting problems (even though some of the information might be a wee bit outdated now, since the book is 23 years old)/5.

However, the first part is inclusive of many linguistics approaches to language, especially tackling common misconceptions about what linguists do.
